LAC talks on, but Army told to act as per need

The Indian Express 16 June 2020 Written by: Ravish Tiwari The next round of talks at the Lt General level will happen only after disengagement at Patrolling Points 14, 15 and 17 in the Galwan and Hot Springs region. As military and diplomatic talks look to lower tensions along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh, India will continue to assert its military strength at the field level till it reaches an honourable understanding with China, highly placed government sources have told The Indian Express. China, sources said, has altered the status quo in the region and brought in additional troops. “We have to demonstrate our strength on the ground. Only then will they come to the talking table,” sources said, adding “there is no need to show aggression, only our strength”. The Indian Army, a top source said, has been given emergency powers to act according to the situation on the ground and assessment. “Army has been given emergency powers for deployme

How the South China Sea situation plays out will be critical for India’s security

The Indian Express 16 June 2020 Written by: Vijay Gokhale It is not China's sea, Indians have sailed its water for centuries. Delhi has stakes in commerce, peace and security in Indo-Pacific, it must now play the long game. The Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s perceptive essay in the latest issue of Foreign Affairs cogently spells out the dilemma that confronts Singapore, and indeed the rest of us in the Indo-Pacific, as the two most consequential powers of the world, the United States, which PM Lee calls the “resident power”, and China, which he says is “the reality on the doorstep”, are engaged in a fundamental transformation of their relationship. Almost nobody any longer thinks that China will conform to the US worldview, or that China’s rise from hereon will be unchallenged. The Indo-Pacific has prospered under American hegemony for the previous 40 years not just because of their huge investments — $328.8 billion in the Association

The Global AI Talent Tracker

Marco Polo Countries, companies, and institutions around the world are mobilizing to apply the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to an enormous range of economic and social problems. That application requires bringing together several key inputs: research and engineering talent, data, computational power, and a healthy innovation ecosystem. Talent is one of the most important—and the most clearly quantifiable—of those inputs. To assess the global balance and flow of top AI scientists we focused on what many consider the top AI conference for deep learning: Neural Information Processing Systems, a.k.a. NeurIPS. For its December 2019 conference, NeurIPS saw a record-breaking 15,920 researchers submit 6,614 papers, with a paper acceptance rate of 21.6%, making it one of the largest, most popular, and most selective AI conferences on record. We created a unique and rich dataset of researchers with papers accepted at NeurIPS 2019, using that as a proxy for

Should you invest in Bharat Bond ETF?

Morningstar 9 June 2020 A reader asked us about Bharat Bond ETF 2023 and 2030, citing their “fantastic annualized returns”. He wanted to invest Rs 25 lakhs for a duration varying between 4 to 12 months. Our response. When looking at fund returns, consider ‘Absolute Returns’ for investment periods less than 1 year, annualized returns for longer time periods. Also, remember that returns rarely follow a straight line, the only exceptions being funds such as Overnight Funds and Liquid Funds. The Bharat Bond ETF April 2023 and April 2030 are Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that invest and replicate the NIFTY Bharat Bond index of the respective maturities. The index comprises of AAA-rated Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). The index constituents, and thus the fund holdings, are constituted such that they are run with a target maturity date of April 2023 and April 2030, respectively. i.e. the bonds mature around the given maturity date of the ETF (before not after).

Hindustan Times 16 June 2020  Posted by: Prashasti Singh Dr. Michael Ryan, emergencies chief of the World Health Organization, said the finding that this virus genome “may represent a strain commonly transmitting in Europe” is significant but that verifying the hypothesis requires the sequences be shared. Bitcoin drops below $9,000 level for the first time since May

Hindustan Times 15 June 2020 Posted by: Harshit Sabarwal Bitcoin slid below $9,000 on Monday for the first time since May, joining a downdraft in global equities begun during Asia hours amid growing concern about the risks of a second wave of coronavirus infections. The largest cryptocurrency tumbled as much as 5.1% Monday and recovered to about $9,100 as of 8:55 a.m. in London, according to consolidated pricing data from Bloomberg. For the first time since the end of April, the token dipped below its 50-day moving average, a level that’s considered a point of resistance for some traders. Bitcoin has flirted with $10,000 since May, failing to sustain a rally above that key psychological level after the closely watched “halving” industry event that reduced the amount of the cryptocurrency earned by miners. Stocks slid globally on Monday alongside US equity futures, in an echo of last Thursday’s risk-off mode. Chinese economic data Monday disappointed investors
