For the first time, a Union Cabinet minister has indicated that Aadhaar linkage with property transactions would be made mandatory.  Union Housing Minister Hardeep Puri has said that he has no doubt the linkage would happen. Speaking to Nayantara Rai of ET NOW, Puri said such a move would go a long way in sucking out black money from real estate and also help in crackdown on benami properties. "Seeding Aadhaar to property transaction is a great idea but I’m not going to make an announcement on that

How focussed diplomacy won India the International Court of Justice battle

Written by Shubhajit Roy | New Delhi | Updated: November 22, 2017 As smog enveloped the Delhi sky on the morning of November 10, South Block was busy chalking out plans to tackle the proposed odd-even scheme. Top officials were exchanging notes on who has odd-numbered cars and who has even ones, and the administration was working out car-pooling. At around that time, in New York, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had just finished the first round of voting for the post of a judge — Dalveer Bhandari, former Indian judge, had beaten UK’s Christopher Greenwood. The count was 115 votes in favour of Bhandari, 76 for Greenwood. But the outcome was the opposite in UN Security Council (UNSC), where Greenwood beat Bhandari nine to six. As External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was preparing for bilateral talks with visiting Vice Prime Minister from Democratic Republic of Congo, Leonard She Okitundu, she got a call from India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Syed Akbar

Google collects Android users’ locations even when location services are disabled

Reuters/Stephen Lam, Nov 21, 2017 Many people realize that smartphones track their locations. But what if you actively turn off location services, haven’t used any apps, and haven’t even inserted a carrier SIM card? Even if you take all of those precautions, phones running Android software gather data about your location and send it back to Google when they’re connected to the internet, a Quartz investigation has revealed. Since the beginning of 2017, Android phones have been collecting the addresses of nearby cellular towers—even when location services are disabled—and sending that data back to Google. The result is that Google, the unit of Alphabet behind Android, has access to data about individuals’ locations and their movements that go far beyond a reasonable consumer expectation of privacy. Quartz observed the data collection occur and contacted Google, which confirmed the practice. The cell tower addresses have been included in information sent to the system Google

Airports Authority of India (AAI) will implement the government's ambitious "digi yatra" programme as a pilot project early next year from these three airports and then roll out this Aadhaar-based seamless travel experience at other airports. Under the Aadhaar-based system, flyers will use stored biometrics to prove identity to enter terminals+ ; their Aadhaar-linked airline database will show what flight they are booked on and similarly linked airport databases will show they have been security screened and allowed access to boarding gate closer to the flight departure time. These three processes will eventually eliminate the need to show paper ID cards, paper tickets and boarding cards. AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra said: "This solution

Black money crackdown: Linking offshore structures to tax evasion is case of mistaken identity

By: Mukesh Butani | Published: November 22, 2017 The BBC noted that the name “Paradise Papers” dovetails well with the French term for a tax haven, paradis fiscal. Last fortnight, 13.4 million documents weighing over 1.4 terabytes of leaked data of an offshore law firm Appleby found its way to Wikipedia. The data leaked (by hackers) to a German newspaper comprised the most guarded investments and funding structures of over 120,000 businesses and individuals, not sparing world’s powerful monarchs, political leaders and most valued companies. The data shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), a network of 380 journalists working collaboratively, made headlines to rattle administrations, leading countries such as Spain and India to order official enquiries and possible investigations. The Paradise Papers, as the recent leaks are labelled, coming after the Panama Papers of 2016, are more on theatrics and less on content. The media tendency in such
