India braces for worst locust attack in three decades: Authorities procure drones, pesticides but financial damage from crop loss to be huge

Firstpost May 29, 2020 Already overwhelmed by the coronavirus pandemic, farmers in north India are now worrying over the kharif crop even as a new wave of locust attack, predicted to be the worst in almost three decades, is expected by June. “Locusts are a regular feature in the country but this attack is huge. It is a once-in-a-three-decade situation and timed very badly for us as we are already dealing with coronavirus,” Soumitra Dasgupta, Inspector General, Wildlife, Ministry of Environment and Forests, told  PTI . Desert locusts have engulfed around 35,000 hectares in seven of India’s states, threatening some vegetable and pulse crops, government officials and farm experts told  Reuters . In April, locusts flew in from Pakistan and wreaked havoc in 18 districts of  Rajasthan  and 12 districts of Madhya Pradesh, sending farmers into a scurry to save their wheat and oilseed crops. But earlier this week, swarms flew into Jaipur’s Murlipura and Vidhyadhar Nagar areas, in th

India should pull out forces from Kalapani: Nepalese Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali

The Hindu May 28,2020 Author: Kallol Bhattacherjee India should withdraw security forces from the Kalapani region and restore status quo, Nepalese Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali said on Wednesday. He said a solution to the border dispute should be found urgently, even as Indian sources confirmed that they were closely monitoring the debates in Nepal parliament to provide a constitutional guarantee to the new map that shows disputed areas as a pat of Nepal's sovereign territory “We want India to honour the letter and spirit of the [Sugauli] Treaty. The most appropriate way of doing this would be to withdraw security forces from Kalapani and hand over the above territories back to Nepal. We merely reiterated that unilateral acts like road construction in Nepal’s territory should not have been done, and the issue should be resolved through talks at the earliest,” Mr. Gyawali said in an interview to  The Hindu Mr. Gyawali said Nepal appreciated the ties it

LAC standoff | Now, Trump offers to mediate between India and China

The Hindu May 29, 2020 U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he had offered to help New Delhi and Beijing resolve their ongoing  tensions at the Line of Actual Control  (LAC). The offer came as a surprise on a day when the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA)  appeared to soften its line  on the stand-off, suggesting the situation was “stable and controllable” now. “We have informed both India and China that the United States is ready, willing and able to mediate or arbitrate their now raging border dispute. Thank you!,” Mr. Trump tweeted. Mr. Trump did not elaborate on his offer, which came as a surprise for several reasons. While the U.S. has offered to mediate between India and Pakistan on multiple occasions in the past, this is the first time an American official has offered to be the third party between India and China publicly. x His comments also appear to be at variance from the stand taken by Alice Wells, who was then a senior U.S. State D

Dawn May 29, 2020 Author :  Baqir Sajjad Syed ISLAMABAD: The United Arab Emirates and the Maldives together thwarted a Pakistani attempt to set up an informal group of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) envoys at the United Nations on Islamophobia. A senior diplomatic source told Dawn that Pakistan’s permanent representative at the United Nations Munir Akram highlighted the issue of Islamophobia at a recent virtual meeting of the envoys of OIC member countries at the UN. It was a routine meeting of the envoys of OIC countries, which discussed other issues as well. The Pakistan envoy specifically highlighted the plight of the Muslims in India and the people of occupied Kashmir, who are suffering at the hands of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. He told the meeting that Islamophobia in India had become more pronounced during the Covid-19 pandemic and recalled the actions taken by Modi government to change demography of occupied Kashmir by allowing non-Kashmiris to t

Pak PM Imran Khan says India’s ‘expansionist policies’ threatening its neighbors

Hindustan Times May 28, 2020 Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday alleged that the Indian government’s “arrogant expansionist policies” is becoming “a threat” to its neighbours as he tried to curry favour with Islamabad’s all-weather ally, China. The Indian government “with its arrogant expansionist policies, akin to Nazi’s Lebensraum (Living Space), is becoming a threat to India’s neighbours. Bangladesh through Citizenship Act, border disputes with Nepal & China, & Pak threatened with false flag operation,” Khan said in a series of tweets. Several areas along the 3,500-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh and North Sikkim have witnessed major military build-up by both the Indian and Chinese armies recently, in a clear signal of escalating tension and hardening of respective positions by the two sides even two weeks after they were engaged in two separate face-offs. The LAC is the de-facto border between India and China. Pakistan and China c

US to revoke Iran nuclear cooperation sanctions waivers

Hindustan Times May 28, 2020 The Trump administration is ending nearly all of the last vestiges of U.S. sanctions relief provided under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, according to current and former U.S. officials and congressional aides. They said Wednesday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will revoke all but one of sanctions waivers covering civil nuclear cooperation. The waivers had allowed Russian, European and Chinese companies to continue to work on Iran’s civilian nuclear facilities without drawing American penalties. The waivers were last renewed at the end of March and are due to expire at the end of the week. The revocations will give foreign companies 60 days to wind down their operations, according to the officials, who were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity. A formal announcement was expected on Thursday. Pompeo in March had opposed extending the waivers, which are among the few remaining components of the nucle
