Bullet train: Gujarat farmers up in arms, oppose land surveys

Economic Times June 19, 2018 Land acquisition for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is facing opposition from farmers in Gujarat, with villagers not allowing the joint measurement survey to take place in many places. Farmer leaders are demanding that acquisition should take place under the Central law and not the state act. Bhagubhai Patel, a farmer from the nearby Saron village, said villagers were not given intimation about the survey in time. "A survey team was today turned away after farmers objected saying they were not informed in advance. Earlier too around 150 affected farmers had gathered raising objection, not letting the team to conduct the survey," he said. "The land which is being acquired is fertile and well-irrigated, known for cultivation of export-quality fruit. The Economic Times June 20, 2018 New Delhi, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said that defence sector is more prone to cyber threats and it was important to safeguard cyberspace with anticipation of possible attacks, an official statement said. Sitharaman, who addressed a workshop on cyber security framework, congratulated the Department of Defence Production for formulating a Cyber Security Framework for itself and also establishing cells at various levels to handle cyber security related issues.  According to the statement, the minister called for creating a workforce in accordance with the country's vision to become a dominant force in cyber space. The Economic Times June 19, 2018 Kolkata, June 19 (IANS) Gene therapy and biotechnology can be used to tackle environmental issues like deforestation and air pollution, while genetic modification in mosquitoes can solve the problems of epidemic diseases such as dengue and malaria, experts said here on Tuesday. "Gene therapy is very promising in solving the problems in curing diseases and genetic disorders that do not have any remedy at present. Genetic modification in mosquitoes can solve the problems of epidemic diseases such as dengue and malaria," Nabarun Ghosh, a biology professor at West Texas A&M University, said while addressing school students at Science City here. Punjab expects paddy to cover 30 lakh hectares; sowing to begin on Wednesday

Business Line June 19, 2018 Paddy transplantation will begin Wednesday in Punjab, with the State expecting to have about 30 lakh hectares under the kharif crop. “We are expecting about 30 lakh hectares under paddy this year as against 30.65 lakh hectares of area last year,” Punjab Agriculture Department Director JS Bains said on Tuesday. The State agriculture department had announced the paddy transplantation from June 20 instead of June 15 to preserve water and check the fast depleting ground-water table. The five-day delay in paddy transplantation is expected to save nearly 24 lakh million litres of water, said an official. However, some farmers at certain places defied the order by sowing paddy before June 20. The agriculture department took action against those who flouted the order of not transplanting paddy before June 20. “Action against farmers mostly in Barnala, Sangrur and Bathinda was taken for flouting the order,” said Bains. The Health Profile for 2018 has been prepared by the Central Bureau of Health Intelligence and was released by the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda. The profile compiles details of disease burdens and other health-related statistics from different Indian states, including Odisha. India decides not to immediately revive Air India sale plan

Wion June 20, 2018 India has virtually abandoned a plan to sell its ailing state carrier Air India after failing to attract buyers,  Bloomberg  reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. The Indian government plans to focus on improving the carrier's operations and selling its building in Mumbai, ground handling and aircraft maintenance units, according to the report. The government in March finalised plans to divest a majority stake in Air India and offload about $5.1 billion of its debt, but prospective buyers stayed away, with some citing onerous terms as a reason for their lack of interest. Air India and the Indian government could not be reached for comment outside business hours.
