The Quint April 08, 2019 The SP, BSP and RLD held a rally in Deoband on Sunday, 7 April, where, despite long-standing differences between BSP supremo Mayawati and Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Aazad, his supporters made an appearance. They shouted slogans and waved banners in support of party chief Chandrashekhar Aazad. The Bhim Army is not a part of the coalition that was holding the rally. In fact, Mayawati has vehemently opposed Aazad and even attacked his decision to contest from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat. She said that his move would benefit the BJP by dividing the Dalit vote. It was unexpected for many reasons. For starters, he had been arrested last year following clashes between Dalits and Thakurs in Saharanpur in western U.P. In November 2017, when the Allahabad High Court granted him bail, it observed that the charges against him seemed “politically motivated”. Why now? THE ALL India Jat Aarakshan Sanghrash Samiti (AIJASS) led by Yashpal Malik Sunday announced another phase of protests from August 16 to press for their demands of reservation for Jats in government jobs and the withdrawal of cases lodged during the February 2016 violence that erupted following the quota stir. Initially, the stir will be launched in nine districts of Haryana that have considerable presence of Jats. These are Rohtak, Jhajjar, Bhiwani, Hisar, Kaithal, Jind, Panipat and Sonipat. Under the banner of Dhangar Sangharsh Samiti Maharashtra Rajya (DSSMR), the community leaders in Maharashtra plan to hold a statewide agitation from 10 am to 6 pm on Monday. At a DSSMR meeting held in Mumbai on Saturday, local leaders across western and northern Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha regions were directed to mobilise the community and identify strategic locations in their respective districts and villages for the stir.
