Sebi blinks, gives India Inc two more years to split CMD position

The Business Standard: Shrimi Choudhary  : January 14, 2020 The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has given India Inc another two years to separate the positions of chairman and managing director (MD) in companies, giving a breather to many top guns of industry. The move follows resistance by big companies and industry bodies, which cited a compliance burden amid a downturn in the economy. The regulator had mandated the top 500 listed companies by market value to separate the chairman and MD posts by April 1 this year. Through a gazette notification dated January 10, the date of compliance has been postponed to April 2022. Sebi hasn’t given any reasons for the deferment. Despite Sebi giving ample time to India Inc to meet the requirement, many companies were yet to comply with this, with less than three months left for the deadline. It is learnt that many companies had approached the ministries concerned and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), seeking a review of t

Our Institutions, Especially The Police, Are Too Politicised

Outlook: Vappala Balachandran: January 11, 2020 Recent events connected with protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) have led to an unmistakable public impression that our police are influenced by the ruling party. Their harsh measures in Uttar Pradesh and in Jamia Millia and their conspicuous abdication of responsibility at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on January 5 are quoted as evidence. The cascading country wide student protests after the JNU violence have been linked by the foreign media to the Home Minister’s lack of interest in “reconciliation with student protesters”. The Lt.Governor and the Commissioner of Police of New Delhi who are in charge of the capital city’s law and order chose to avoid the media instead of briefing them on the developing situation, when unprecedented violence was unleashed by masked goons on the campus of JNU, an internationally recognized university. It looked as though they were waiting for a cue from higher political ci

Global banks urge EU to ‘improve’ market access as Brexit looms

The Hindustan Times: Reuters: January 14, 2020 International banks have called on the European Union to make its system for financial market access more transparent and predictable to avoid hurting markets and consumers. The Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME), whose members include major international banks and asset managers, said it was “timely” to review and improve the bloc’s financial market access regime known as equivalence. The EU grants market access to foreign financial firms like asset managers and clearing houses if it deems their home market rules are similar enough to regulation in the bloc. Brexit has already put equivalence under scrutiny as there is a June 30 target for the EU to assess the equivalence of Britain’s financial regulation to allow the UK finance industry to maintain some access to EU markets after a Brexit transition period ends in December. In its 14-page report on Tuesday, London-based AFME only directly mentions Br
