A new analysis published in The Lancet has projected that the world population will peak much earlier than previously estimated. It projects the peak at 9.73 billion in 2064, which is 36 years earlier than the 11 billion peak projected for 2100 by last year’s UN report World Population Prospects. For 2100, the new report projects a decline to 8.79 billion from the 2064 peak. For India, the report projects a peak population of 1.6 billion in 2048, up from 1.38 billion in 2017. More than 20 countries, including Italy, Japan, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Spain and Thailand, will see their numbers diminish by at least half by the year 2100, according to projections in a major study. China's population will fall from 1.4 billion people today to 730 million in 80 years, said the study led by an international team of researchers, published in The Lancet on Wednesday. The Quint, Feb 22, 2019 The government is reportedly looking to discard National Sample Survey Office’s (NSSO) report on unemployment and use the Labour Bureau’s survey of the Mudra scheme instead. In a report, The Indian Express said the Niti Aayog has asked the Labour Ministry to present the survey’s findings by 27 February. The ministry has reportedly been asked to show data for direct employment and jobs created by spin-off as a result of availing the Mudra scheme. The development attains significance as the Modi-led government has been facing flak on being unable to create enough jobs. The sixth employment-unemployment survey of the Labour Bureau showed unemployment rising to a four-year high of 3.9 percent in in 2016-17. The PSU job growth was mainly driven by 58% employment growth in the logistics sector, 13% in the finance sector, and 8% in the banking sector, a Care Ratings study said. The study of employment growth in 700 companies also showed that overall job growth has declined in FY18 as compared with previous fiscal even as there was robust sales growth in some cases. The total permanent employees in the sample of these 700 companies increased from 3.98 million in FY16 to 4.29 million in FY17, further increasing by 6.6% in FY18 to touch 4.57 million. “There has been a marginal dip in the employment growth from 7.7% in FY17 to 6.6% in FY18 indicating pressures of job creation,” the study said. While it’s not yet clear who will decide their fate, the issue of illegal immigrants in Assam has been historically determined by two tribunals. The first is the Foreigners Tribunal (FT), set up by the Assam government in 1964, to identify the legal status of suspected foreigners in Assam. There are 100 FTs in Assam as on date. The second is the Illegal Migrants Determination Tribunal, or IM (DT), established in 1985, with special provisions for Assam. It only considered the cases of those who had allegedly entered India after March 25, 1971; crucially, these placed the onus of proving citizenship on the accuser, rather than the accused. Busy work routines are depriving Indians from going on vacations, a recent study has revealed. Globally, India has been ranked as the fifth most vacation deprived country due to heavy work schedule. The statement was made after 60 per cent respondents corroborated with the view during a survey conducted by Expedia Vacation Deprivation Report 2017. Expedia is a full-service online travel agency. South Korea stood at number one position with 82 per cent, followed by France (66 per cent), Malaysia (65 per cent) and Hong Kong (64 per cent), the report showed.
