US bans cotton imports from Chinese firm on ‘slave labor’

The Hindustan Times Mallika Soni 03.12.2020 The Trump administration banned cotton imports from a military-linked Chinese firm it accuses  of relying on “slave labor,” as the US seeks to ramp up economic pressure on Beijing over its  treatment of Muslim ethnic minority groups. The US Department of Homeland Security said Wednesday that customs officers at American ports would impound “shipments containing cotton and cotton products originating” from the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps., one of China’s largest producers. The organization -- set up by the Communist Party more than 60 years ago to help develop the far western region of Xinjiang -- was previously hit by Treasury Department sanctions barring it from transactions with American companies and citizens. “The human rights abuses taking place at the hand of the Chinese Communist government will not be tolerated by President Trump and the American people,” DHS Acting Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli said in...

U.S. accuses Chinese nationals of hacking spree for COVID-19 data, defense secrets

Reuters July 21, 2020 U.S. accuses Chinese nationals of hacking spree for COVID-19 data, defense secrets WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday indicted two Chinese nationals over their role in what the agency called a decade-long cyber espionage campaign that targeted defense contractors, COVID researchers and hundreds of other victims worldwide. U.S. authorities said Li Xiaoyu and Dong Jiazhi stole terabytes of weapons designs, drug information, software source code, and personal data from targets that included dissidents and Chinese opposition figures. They were contractors for the Chinese government, rather than full-fledged spies, U.S. officials said. U.S. Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers said at a virtual press conference the hackings showed China “is willing to turn a blind eye to prolific criminal hackers operating within its borders.” “In this manner, China has now taken its place, alongside Russia, Ir...

Trump threat to 'decouple' U.S. and China hits trade, investment reality

The Firstpost June 24, 2020 Posted by  David Lawder Conflicting talk from Trump administration officials about "decoupling" the U.S. economy from China is running into challenging reality: Chinese imports of U.S. goods are rising, investment by American companies into China continues, and markets are wary of separating the world's biggest economies. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro gave Asian markets a scare on Monday night by telling Fox News Channel that the U.S.-China trade deal was "over." U.S. stock futures dropped, the dollar rose, and volatility indices climbed. Navarro quickly backtracked on Monday night, saying he was referring to a lack of trust between the United States and China over the coronavirus outbreak. President Donald Trump also quickly tweeted that the deal was intact. On Tuesday, National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow praised Beijing, telling Fox Business Network "they've actually picked up their game...

US will consider rejoining WHO if it ends corruption, reliance on China: White House

The Indian Express Dated June 1, 2020 The US will consider rejoining the World Health Organization if it ends corruption and reliance on  China , the White House said on Sunday. President Donald Trump on Friday terminated America’s relationship with the WHO and accused the global health body of being hand in glove with China  in sharing inaccurate information to the world about the  coronavirus   pandemic  that has killed more than 370,000 people globally. “The WHO needs to reform. What the president said, if the WHO reforms and ends the corruption and ends the reliance on China, the US will very seriously consider coming back,”US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien told ABC News. The US has said that it will spend the money, over USD 400 million which it gives to the WHO, on other international public health bodies. “In the meantime, we’re going to take that USD 400 million that the US spends, compared to the USD 40 million that the Chinese sp...

LAC standoff | Now, Trump offers to mediate between India and China

The Hindu May 29, 2020 U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he had offered to help New Delhi and Beijing resolve their ongoing  tensions at the Line of Actual Control  (LAC). The offer came as a surprise on a day when the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA)  appeared to soften its line  on the stand-off, suggesting the situation was “stable and controllable” now. “We have informed both India and China that the United States is ready, willing and able to mediate or arbitrate their now raging border dispute. Thank you!,” Mr. Trump tweeted. Mr. Trump did not elaborate on his offer, which came as a surprise for several reasons. While the U.S. has offered to mediate between India and Pakistan on multiple occasions in the past, this is the first time an American official has offered to be the third party between India and China publicly. x His comments also appear to be at variance from the stand taken by Alice Wells, who was then a ...

China warns US pushing relations to 'brink of new Cold War'

The Dawn  May 26, 2020 The United States is pushing relations with China to "the brink of a new Cold War", China's foreign minster said on Sunday, rejecting US "lies" over the corona virus while saying Beijing was open to an international effort to find its source. Keeping up the worsening war of words with Washington over the pandemic and a Beijing move to tighten control over Hong Kong , Wang Yi said the United States had been infected by a "political virus" compelling figures there to continually attack China. "It has come to our attention that some political forces in the US are taking China-US relations hostage and pushing our two countries to the brink of a new Cold War," Wang told reporters during a press conference at China's week-long annual parliamentary session. Longstanding friction between the two powers over trade , human rights and a range of other issues have been pushed to new heights since th...
