Indian shadow banks remain weak as credit crisis continues unabated

Business Standard Dated November 19, 2019  By Divya Patil The health of India’s shadow  banks  remained weak last month as a  credit  crisis continued to sting. Among four indicators compiled by  Bloomberg News  covering areas including liquidity and share performance, three were stuck in the same position as the previous month, with two at levels indicating weakness. Another gauge showed total outstanding debt increased at 50 financial firms and other companies impacted by the crisis, as banking-system liquidity remained buoyant given the central bank’s monetary easing. To be sure, the absolute amount of outstanding debt wasn’t at alarming levels, and access to  credit  markets for healthier financiers could help get money flowing more efficiently again -- just what the flagging economy needs. But if more troubled borrowers continue to add rather than pare borrowings, that could prolong the crisis. Authorities have taken more steps recently to help the shadow bank

The Economic Times By   Aditi Shrivastava, Nov- 18, 2019 BENGALURU: India’s top two web retailers Flipkart and Amazon clocked combined sales of Rs 31,000 crore ($4.3 billion) during the crucial 15-day festival period in October, according to a report by Red-Seer Consulting that ET has exclusively accessed. The number fell short of analyst expectations of $5 billion in sales. The average order value for Flipkart stood at Rs 1,976 versus Rs 1,461 on Amazon, indicating that customers bought highervalue items from the Walmart-owned marketplace. Flipkart led with 64% share of the combined gross sales while Amazon continued to fare higher in net promoter score (NPS). NPS measures the loyalty of customers to a company. ET has reviewed the findings. RedSeer declined to comment on the report citing confidentiality. Gross sales, or gross merchandise value (GMV) in industry parlance, missed analyst estimates by 14%. The two ecommerce marketplaces had been aiming for $5 billion in sales c

Explained: What is driving onion prices

The Indian Express Written by  Parthasarathi Biswas   Updated: November 18, 2019  LAST WEEK, Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, directed the state-owned trading corporation MMTC to import 1 lakh tonnes of onions to help ease the spike in retail prices. The decision marks India’s transition from being an onion exporter to an importer. What has led to the rise in prices? Prices have risen sharply since May this year, caused by delayed arrival of the new crop and damage to the harvested crop in the main onion-growing states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. Due to a decrease in onion acreage in the main onion-growing districts of Maharashtra, arrivals dipped across wholesale markets. Prices at the wholesale market at Lasalgaon, Maharashtra, which were in the range of Rs 500-600 per quintal since the start of January, crossed the Rs 1,000 mark after May. Located in Nashik district, Lasalgaon is the largest onion market in the country and s

Exiled in UK, Pakistan MQM leader seeks asylum from Modi for himself, aides

By PTI November 18, 2019 Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) founder Altaf Hussain, living in exile in the UK, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to grant him and his colleagues asylum or at least some financial assistance to take his case to the International Court of Justice. Promising that he would not interfere in politics, Hussain took to social media last week to relay a new speech, in which he also welcomed the Supreme Court verdict in the Ayodhya case. The 67-year-old is due to stand trial in the UK on an offence of encouraging terrorism through a speech relayed to his followers in Pakistan a few years ago. “If India today, and Prime Minister Modi, allow me to come to India and provide me asylum with my colleagues, I am ready to come to India along with my colleagues, because my grandfather is buried there, my grandmother is buried there, my thousands of relatives are buried there. I want to go there, to their graves,” said Hussain, in a speech dated November

With the economic centre of gravity shifting to states, India’s growth hinges on cooperative federalism.

The Indian Expres Written by  Duvvuri Subbarao   November 18, 2019 9:52:46 am In the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business index released last month, India ranked 63, an impressive jump from its lowly rank of 142 when the Narendra Modi government first came into office in 2014. Yet, there is anecdotal evidence of investors being frustrated by venality, indifference and corruption at the operating level. Now consider this: When the government amended the terms of reference of the 15th Finance Commission a few months ago asking that allocations for defence and internal security be carved out upfront, before determining the pool of resources to be shared with the states, the latter baulked at the highhandedness of the Centre. Also consider this: Early in his tenure, Modi attempted to reform the land acquisition law by tweaking the balance in favour of investors, but quickly buckled down as many states took umbrage. This, even though land is on the concurrent list in the Consti

China’s Lead in the AI War Won’t Last Forever

Bloomberg Opinion,  By Hal Brands November 13, 2019, 3:30 AM GMT+5:30 Of all the emerging technologies that will change our daily lives, none has more transformative potential than artificial intelligence. And AI — the use of computers to solve problems that would normally require natural, or human, intelligence — will also have a profound effect on the global balance of economic and military power. It will change how societies are governed and people are ruled. Debates about whether China or the U.S. will dominate the 21st century are thus necessarily debates about who will lead in AI innovation, and whether democratic or authoritarian systems are better suited to that challenge. A new report from the bipartisan National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence contains reason for cautious optimism on that latter question, even as it reminds us that an authoritarian China will be a formidable competitor indeed. The AI commission, led by former Alphabet Inc. chairman Er

No truck with Dalai Lama please, China to India

The Times of India,   TNN | Nov 18, 2019, 01.03 AM NEW DELHI: Behind the facade of a 'successful' informal summit, India and China may be passing through the worst phase in bilateral ties since the Doklam standoff. While a lot of it has to do with Beijing’s unequivocal denunciation of India’s reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), the Dalai Lama or Tibet issue has added another layer of complexity to the troubled relations. China officially reminded India yet again this month that any interaction which senior Indian leaders or government functionaries might have with the Dalai Lama was going to be detrimental to the bilateral relationship, ToI has learnt. This was conveyed to Indian officials days before the November 8-9 Rising Himachal global investors summit in Dharamshala, the seat of Tibetan government-in-exile, which was addressed by PM Narendra Modi. China was apparently spooked by the possibility of Indian leaders and officials from both cent

I-T dept detects Rs 435-crore undisclosed income after raids on TN firm

The Times of India,  PTI | Updated: Nov 17, 2019, 23:09 IST NEW DELHI: The income tax department has detected alleged undisclosed income of Rs 435 crore after it raided a Tamil Nadu-based company, the CBDT said on Sunday. Unaccounted cash of Rs 32.6 crore and about 10 kgs of gold jewellery have been seized during the search operations that were launched on November 15 at twenty premises in "a tier 3 city of Tamil Nadu", it said without disclosing the exact locations. "The company is in the business of manufacturing certain specialised materials which are supplied to the health sector in India and abroad," the CBDT said in a statement. The Central Board of Direct Taxes is the policy-making body for the I-T department. It said the company, which was not identified, was "indulging in substantial tax evasion". "The major finding of the search action is that the company has systematically inflated its expenditure using bogu

Another bad news on the economy front, reduced consumption in rural areas, data is showing signs - and the situation may be worse

Jansatta, P Vaidyanathan Iyer Published on: November 18, 2019 8:12 AM India's position at the front of the economy does not appear to be improving at the moment. The situation may worsen in view of the way in which demand for goods is declining in rural areas. At the same time, on Friday, the government had stopped the 2017-18 survey related to domestic consumption from going public, citing many fluctuations and changes in the circumstances regarding consumption. But, all the indications are that since the beginning of FY 2019-20, the demand situation in rural areas has changed. 'The Indian Express' spoke to the people operating major companies of the country to find out all the signs of demand in rural areas. During this time it was found that FMCG, tractors, two-wheelers are not able to make demand in rural areas of the country. Apart from this, there is a reduction in demand for gold in other signs. Since, half of the demand for gold is in rural areas. In this

Reviewing Peca’s powers

DAWN.COM | NOVEMBER 18, 2019 Nasir Ayyaz  November 18, 2019    THE Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, was being debated in parliament as a bill, concerns from various corners were expressed over the impact and likely misuses of the proposed law. The parliamentary committees, in order to address these concerns, held public hearings on the proposed law, and further safeguards were incorporated in the law to address these concerns. Adherence to the safeguards provided in Peca is essential not only for legal reasons but also keeping in view the widespread use and penetration of digital technology in society. This piece of writing is an attempt to highlight some of the relevant provisions of Peca and the latter’s relation with other laws that appear to be ignored during implementation of the law. As Peca’s preamble denotes, it is a special law for prevention, investigation, prosecution and trial of cybercrimes. The scheme of the law is that Chapter I provides the sho

Key sales numbers show rural demand may dip further

The Indian Express,  Written by P Vaidyanathan Iyer |New November 18, 2019 THE GOVERNMENT Friday claimed that a significant divergence in levels of consumption and direction of change prompted it to withhold the findings of the survey on household consumption expenditure for July 2017-June 2018. But all major indicators of rural demand suggest the situation has only worsened since the beginning of financial year 2019-20, and the economy is yet to see the end of the current slowdown cycle. The Indian Express spoke to business leaders across key industries to find that all indicators of rural demand — sales of FMCG, and of tractors and two-wheelers, in non-cities — show they are still riding the trough. Other indicators, such as a sharp fall in gold imports in the last four months (half of gold demand is rural-driven) also point to slackening demand. EXPLAINED Revival still some time away FMCG, tractor and motorcycle sales, as well as a decline in real wages,
