LAC: China violates military consensus to change status quo

The telegraph Dated: September 01, 2020 Tension is running high on the Ladakh border after India said it had pre-empted China’s “provocative military movements to change the status quo” and Beijing responded by asking New Delhi to withdraw troops that had “illegally crossed” the Line of Actual Control (LAC). On Saturday night, Indian soldiers noticed Chinese troop movements and mobilised to deter further encroachment, the Indian Army said. The confrontation did not escalate into a clash, sources said. “On the night of 29/30 August 2020, PLA (Chinese People’s Liberation Army) troops violated the previous consensus arrived at during military and diplomatic engagements during the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo,” the Indian Army said in a statement on Monday afternoon. “Indian troops pre-empted this PLA activity on the southern bank of Pangong Tso Lake, undertook measures to strengthen o

Economy: steepest GDP decline on record

Telegraph Dated: September 01, 2020 The Indian economy shrank by 23.9 per cent in the first quarter ended June 30, signalling that the road to recovery would be more arduous than most economists have projected. It marks the steepest decline since the National Statistical Office (NSO) started quarterly measurement of gross domestic product (GDP) in 1996. The slide in real GDP — which is measured on the basis of prices in 2011-12 — had been expected after the Narendra Modi government clamped the world’s severest lockdown in March to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, triggering a slump in consumer spending, private investment and exports. But the fall has been steeper than forecast. The contraction in India’s economic growth during April-June has been amongst the severest so far globally. Only Peru (-30.2 per cent) and Macau (-67.8 per cent) have reported lower GDP growth numbers for the period, Care Ratings said in a research report. Real GDP is widely expected to

The print Dated: August 31,

RBI steps to keep lid on yields, equity markets likely to be cautious on geopolitical tensions

The Indian Express Dated September 01, 2020 A record  contraction of 23.9 per cent  in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in April-June quarter is unlikely to cause disruption in the bond market as measures announced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday will provide a fresh impetus to buying activity while keeping a lid on yields. Equity markets, which are being driven largely by global liquidity and expectations of normalcy returning to the markets, may remain cautious after sharp falls on Monday, following news of Chinese aggression at the Indian borders, market analysts said. The decline in nominal GDP growth rate, however, is expected to push up the fiscal deficit for the year. According to a report by Care Ratings, while the nominal GDP growth fell to record lows of -22.6 per cent in Q1 2020-21, as against growth of 8.1 per cent in Q1 2019-20, since it indicated lower revenues for the government it has adverse implications for the fiscal deficit ratio. “The severe cont

India among worst hit major economies globally; local lockdowns added to woes

The Indian Express Dated September 01, 2020 India’s gross domestic product (GDP), which  contracted by 23.9 per cent  during the April-June quarter 2020-21, is among the worst in countries severely impacted by the  Covid-19   pandemic , an analysis of GDP number across major economies has shown. While  China , which many believe to be the epicentre of the Covid-19 outbreak, announced a surprise 3.2 per cent growth in its GDP during this quarter compared to the same period last year, others like the UK and Germany witnessed a contraction. For the April-June period, the UK took a 20.4 per cent hit in its GDP, while Germany experienced a “record” 10.1 per cent contraction. For the UK, the fall in its GDP was reportedly one of the worst in the European region and the country’s second consecutive quarterly decline as its government enforced lockdowns hit services, construction and production. China’s sharp recovery in the April-June quarter was chiefly due to the country’s su

India blocks China’s attempt to ‘change status quo’ in eastern Ladakh, says Army

scroll.in Dated: August 31, 2020 The  Indian Army  on Monday said that the Chinese soldiers had “carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo” in eastern Ladakh but their attempts were thwarted by Indian soldiers. The incident occurred on the south bank of Pangong Tso on the intervening night of August 29 and 30. “On the night of 29/30 August 2020, PLA [People’s Liberation Army] troops violated the previous consensus arrived at during military and diplomatic engagements during the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo,” the statement read. “Indian troops pre-empted this PLA activity on the Southern Bank of Pangong Tso Lake, undertook measures to strengthen our positions and thwart Chinese intentions to unilaterally change facts on ground.” The statement said that the Army was committed to maintaining peace and tranquility through dialogue, but equally determined to protect its terri

China said it will restrict the exports of some artificial intelligence technology to “safeguard national economic security,” and will require government permits for overseas transfers. AI interface technologies such as speech and text recognition, and those that analyze data to make personalized content recommendations, were added to a revised list of export-control products published on the Ministry of Commerce’s website late Friday. The new restrictions could encompass technologies used by China’s ByteDance Ltd., the official Xinhua News Agency reported, citing a trade expert. Beijing-based ByteDance is being forced by President Donald Trump’s administration to sell the US operations of its popular video-sharing TikTok app, and it’s unclear if the new rule

Don’t collect levy charges on electronic payments, says finance ministry

Hindustan Times  Dated: August 31, 2020 The Union Ministry of Finance has advised all the banks not to collect any charges on transactions or payments made through electronic mode, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a statement on Sunday. According to the CBDT, some representations were made that some banks are imposing and collecting charges on transactions carried out through UPI. A certain number of transactions were allowed free by these banks beyond which every transaction bears a charge, the CBDT noted. “This is in violation of the Circular no 32/2019 dated December 30, 20219, which was issued by CBDT to clarify that based on section 10A of (Payment and Settlement System (PSS) Act, any charge including MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) shall not be applicable on or after January 1, 2020 on payments made through electronic modes,” the release said.
