More troops to Uttarakhand after Chinese LAC build-up

Despite lockdown curbs, wheat procurement surpasses last year’s level

This year, the procurement started from April 15 due to the lockdown Notwithstanding the restrictions in place due to Covid-19 lockdown, procurement of wheat by government agencies has exceeded last year’s figures of 341.31 LMT to touch 341.56 LMT till May 24 during Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2020-21, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said on Monday. However, procurement has been sluggish in Uttar Pradesh, which contributes a substantial quantity to central pool. This year, the procurement started from April 15 due to the lockdown. The Ministry had set wheat procurement target of 407 LMT during RMS 2020-21 against which 76.41 per cent (341.56 LMT) has been procured so far. As China intrudes across LAC, India must be alert to a larger strategic shift

Rural job crisis ‘deepens’

 The Telegraph  Tuesday, 26 May 2020 The unemployment rate in rural India has increased by over 2 percentage points in the past week, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), a private research group. The CMIE weekly date showed the unemployment rate in rural India increased to 25.09 per cent against 22.79 per cent the previous week. The unemployment rate in urban areas declined from 26.95 to 22.72 in this period. The unemployment rate nationally increased from 24.01 to 24.34, suggesting one in four persons had nothing to do. The return of migrants to their villages may have pushed up the rural unemployment rate. At the same time, some factories and shops have started operation in urban areas in the past week.
