Three Recent Events Prove the Alarm Bells Are Ringing Louder Than Ever in Kashmir

The Wire Manoj Joshi Dated March 25, 2019 Three Recent Events Prove the Alarm Bells Are Ringing Louder Than Ever in Kashmir The most alarming of these events was the custodial death of a Jamaat member and school principal – likely due to torture.   We know that events in Jammu and Kashmir have been sliding backwards for some time now. The rising death toll in the Valley, the increased recruitment of Valley inhabitants into the armed militancy and the repeated crackdowns and curfews have been signalling this for a while. But three events in recent weeks are ringing the alarm bells louder than ever. The first was the custodial death of Rizwan Asad Pandit earlier this month. He was reportedly a Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu & Kashmir (JIJK) activist and school principal, who had been arrested by the National Investigation Agency. The second was the banning of the JIJK itself and the third, the ban on the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front. These events seem to s

Paradigm shift for TB control

The Hindu  Dated March 26, 2019 Paradigm shift for TB control Ending TB by 2025 is impossible but sustaining its decline is in the realm of reality Tuberculosis (TB) remains the biggest killer disease in India, outnumbering all other infectious diseases put together — this despite our battle against it from 1962, when the National TB Programme (NTP) was launched. All hope was pinned on mass BCG vaccination to prevent TB. In 1978, the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) began, giving BCG to all babies soon after birth and achieving more than 90% coverage. Yet, when evaluated in 1990, the NTP and the EPI had not reduced India’s TB burden. In 1993, the Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) was launched, offering free diagnosis and treatment for patients, rescuing them from otherwise sure death. However, treatment is not prevention. Prevention is essential for control. Short on control Why did the NTP and the EPI fail? Visionary leaders had initi

Weak global economic outlook prompts sell-off in Pakistan's market

The Express Tribune | Karachi March 26, 2019 Market watch: Weak global economic outlook prompts sell-off in Pakistan's market The stock market faced a steep drop on Monday as it took cue from international markets, which went down on fears of global economic slowdown over the next six to eight months. Similar sentiments echoed across world markets with sell-off in equities in Asian markets including India’s Sensex (-0.9%), Japan’s Nikkei (-3.01%) and China’s Shanghai Composite (-1.97%). The KSE-100 index plunged from the moment trading began because of weak domestic cues with investors anticipating a drop in policy rate in the monetary policy announcement later this week. Investor participation remained unsatisfactory as trading volumes dropped to new lows. The KSE-100 index continued its downward trajectory as the absence of triggers meant no respite from the selling pressure. At the end of trading, the benchmark KSE 100-share Index recorded a decrease
