Hindustan Times Published by: Agence France Presse Arms sales rose by nearly five percent worldwide in 2018 in a market dominated by the United States, according to a new report published Monday by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The turnover of the 100 biggest arms manufacturers came to $420 billion, thanks in large part to the US market, said the report. US manufacturers alone accounted for 59 percent of the market, or a turnover of $246 billion, up 7.2 percent on the previous year. “This is a significant increase over one year considering the already high levels of US combined arms sales,” Aude Fleurant, the director of SIPRI’s arms transfers and military expenditure programme, told AFP. US firms were benefitting from the Trump administration’s decision to modernise its armed services to reinforce its position against China and Russia. Unacceptable that India is not in UNSC, says German envoy Walter Lindner

Hindustan Times Published By: Rezaul H Laskar India and Germany, which are working closely on multilateral issues, are both ideal candidates for permanent membership of a reformed UN Security Council (UNSC) that reflects the realities of today’s world, German ambassador Walter Lindner has said. Following German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to India last month, the two countries are now focusing on implementing more than 20 existing MoUs and cooperation in key areas such as smart cities, green mobility and climate change, Lindner said in an interview. The envoy reiterated Merkel’s position that the security lockdown and communications blackout in Kashmir is “not sustainable”, saying Germany, like other members of the European Union (U), wants all restrictions to be lifted “as soon as possible”. Lindner said all countries stand to lose if the UN isn’t reformed as people won’t rely on the world body “because they will say it is not reflecting the reality”. The G4 – Brazi

Officials dismiss concerns over U.S. House resolution on Kashmir

The Hindu Published by : Suhasini Haidar The External Affairs Ministry has refused to comment on the U.S. House resolution on Jammu and Kashmir introduced by  Indian-American lawmaker Pramila Jayapal , even as the government stepped up efforts to ensure that the resolution is not passed, with officials reaching out to Congressmen and women as well as the Indian diaspora to mobilise support. Sources said India is also hopeful that U.S. House members of the India caucus will move the process in their favour, while former diplomats said the larger fallout of the resolution was in the optics, not in its substance. “I think [the resolution] has a lot of sensation value, because while a motion on human rights in the U.S. House or Senate is not uncommon, but one tabled by a person of Indian origin is rare, and countries like Pakistan will use this for their propaganda purposes,” said former Ambassador to the U.S. Lalit Mansingh I think we have enough support on Capitol H
