Washington: India has been ranked at the 116th position in the latest edition of the World Bank's annual Human Capital Index that benchmarks key components of human capital across countries. However, India's score increased to 0.49 from 0.44 in 2018, as per the Human Capital Index report released by the World Bank on Wednesday. The 2020 Human Capital Index update includes health and education data for 174 countries covering 98 per cent of the world's population up to March 2020, providing a pre-pandemic baseline on the health and education of children, with the biggest strides made in low-income countries. Chinese firms to lose India business in Railways, telecom

World Bank projects Indian economy to contract 3.2% in FY21

Live Mint Dated: June 08, 2020 By: Asit Ranjan Mishra The World Bank on Monday projected India’s economy to contract 3.2% in FY21 as stringent measures to restrict the spread of the coronavirus pandemic have heavily curtailed activity in Asia’s third largest economy. In its Global Economic Prospects report, World Bank said the contraction will largely materialize in the year to 31 March and the Indian economy will recover to grow at 3.1% in the following year. “Spillovers from contracting global growth and balance sheet stress in the financial sector will also adversely impact activity, despite some support from fiscal stimulus and continued monetary policy easing," it added. World Bank projects economy will contract 3.2%

The Telegraph Dated: June 09, 2020 India’s economy will shrink 3.2 per cent in the current fiscal, the World Bank said on Monday as it joined a chorus of international agencies that are forecasting a contraction in the growth rate because of the the coronavirus-induced lockdown halting economic activity. The Washington-based multilateral lender said that the Covid-19 pandemic and the multi-phased lockdown imposed to curb its spread has resulted in a devastating blow to the Indian economy.The global economy will shrink 5.2 per cent this year, the World Bank said. The Covid-19 recession is the first since 1870 to be triggered solely by a pandemic, World Bank president David Malpass said in his foreword to the latest edition of the Global Economic Prospect report. In April, the World Bank projected the economy to grow in the range of 1.5 per cent to 2.8 per cent in this fiscal.
