Withdrawal of US Troops: Taliban Delighted, Afghanistan in Fear

The President has recently expressed his desire to pull out the US troops that have been deployed in Afghanistan from a long time. The US officials tried negotiating a deal during the peace talks with Taliban in Qatar on Monday, though they are worried about Afghanistan becoming a base for terrorists and attacking the United States.

The US troops have long been struggling to maintain peace in Afghanistan. Their invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 to drive out the then-Talibani organization from power in order to dismantle al-Qaeda brought immense difficulties for the population. It is not the first time that Trump has decided to bring the troops home. He also called for the withdrawal in early February.

The longest American war started with Taliban militants’ attack on New York and the Pentagon on the instructions of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. US counterattacked and as a result, around 2,400 US forces died in the conflict. Since the US troops along with its allies were successful in overcoming the main hurdle, they then formed a security mission, safeguarding the interests of the Afghanis.

The fears that the withdrawal of the US troops could bring an increment in typical terrorist activities in the area have raised various concerns for the Afghan government. President Trump being aware of the crisis himself said that the problem with pulling the 9,000 US troops from Afghanistan is that the country is a “lab for terrorists”.

“I call it the Harvard of terrorists,” Trump added.

The US troops, when informed about the retreat, warned the Trump administration about the worst consequences. Their belief that fighting the terrorists in Afghanistan would be a much easy task for them rather than re-joining the same fight in the US, was a good enough warning for Trump’s withdrawal plan.

A general of the US troops deployed in Afghanistan even told Trump, “Sir, I’d rather attack them over there, then attack them in our land.”

President Trump is very well aware of the fact that the deployed military has to fulfill its responsibilities towards their country but he wants to remove the US troops as a sign of reverence. After their removal, the Trump administration intends to leave a very “strong intelligence” presence in the country as a backup plan.

Thus, during the seventh round of peace talks with Taliban, the US aimed at ending the long-going US-Taliban war through negotiations. As Taliban demanded the withdrawal of foreign forces from their land, the US’ calls of pledging that the former would not use Afghanistan as a base for carrying out terrorist activities were largely ignored by Taliban.

Taliban’s latest attack on Kabul on Monday, which injured hundreds of citizens while killing many more, is a clear sign of how the situations in the country have worsened over time. There is a possibility that with the prevailing situations, the country would fully become a terrorist-hub, and Talibani’s might carry out their revenge by attacking the US.

While the talks to withdraw the US troops continue, the Afghanis remain hopeless with another tragedy in hand.
