1. JeM Terrorist Absconding After Conviction Held in Delhi

A Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist, absconding for over four years after being sentenced by the Delhi High Court, has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police. The accused, Basir Ahmad, a resident of J&K's Sopore, was held in Srinagar and brought to Delhi to face sentencing by the High Court, officials said Tuesday, 16 July.
"Ahmad was initially arrested along with Abdul Gafoor, a hardcore JeM cadre from Sialkot in Pakistan, and others in 2007 following a fierce encounter in Delhi," a senior police officer said."He went into hiding after a trial court acquitted him in 2013. This decision was later reversed by the Delhi High Court, which convicted him in 2014."
Ahmad was carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh on his head, police said.

2. Madrasa in UP Set on Fire Over Beef Rumours

A madrasa was set on fire by a mob in Behta village in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur district following allegations that beef was found in the area, police said on Tuesday, 16 July.
Sub-Inspector Uma Shankar Yadav of Bindki police station said a mob of around 50 people had demolished the boundary wall of the madrasa and then set the building on fire on Monday.
The police registered a case under the UP Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act after a team veterinarians confirmed that meat recovered near the seminary was beef. Yadav and other policemen had been stationed in the village since Monday after tension prevailed in the area following the recovery of a cow carcass.

3. Delhi Businessman Held for Rs 5 Crore GST Fraud

The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) has arrested the proprietor of the Delhi-based Shree Balaji Enterprises for fraudulently taking input tax credit (ITC) of over Rs 5 crore through fake invoices, an official statement read.
DGGI's Gurugram zonal unit arrested Ajit Jindal, the proprietor of the company, as it had fraudulently taken ITC from total invoice value of Rs 28.11 crore on the basis of invoices issued by "fake" firms, the statement issued by the finance ministry on Tuesday, 16 July, stated.
Geeta Chikkara, deputy director DGGI, Gurugram, said, "He[Jindal] was summoned and had visited the office on 12 July. After questioning, he was arrested from the office and was produced before the district and sessions court and taken on remand. On Tuesday, he was sent to 14 days' judicial custody."

4. Woman, Son Arrested for Allegedly Killing Toddler in Bhopal

A woman and her son were arrested for allegedly kidnapping and killing a three-year-old child whose half burnt body was found in an abandoned house 50 metres away from his home in a village on the outskirts of Bhopal on Tuesday, 16 July, police said.
The police interrogated the woman after villagers said that she was seen near the abandoned house. Police said she confessed during interrogation.
Sunita Solanki (42) who resides in the same neighbourhood committed the crime with the help of her 20-year-old son Shubham Solanki to take a revenge on the boy's father Vipin Meena as she suspected him of being involved in a theft in her house, police said.
Deputy inspector general (DIG) of police, Bhopal Irshad Wali said the woman and her son killed Varun by giving him poison.

5. UAE-Deported Men Reveal IS Plot in Tamil Nadu
A day after 14 Islamic radicals were deported from the United Arab Emirates, their statements recorded by National Investigation Agency and Tamil Nadu police revealed a "meticulous plan to foment unrest" in Tamil Nadu using terror modules/activities.
NIA officials said one of the suspects, Hasan Ali, is an Islamic State (IS) operative assigned to collect explosives, poison, vehicles and knives and also get recruits. Ali and his associate Harish Mohammed were picked up from Nagapattinam district.
All 16 were produced before a special court at Poonamalee on Tuesday, 16 July, and were remanded in judicial custody till 25 July. An official of the NIA said the suspects had formed several fronts, such as Wahadat-e-Islami, Jamaat Wahadat-ui-Islam-alJihadiya, Jihadist Islamic Unit and Ansarallah, to "spread terror" and "establish an Islamic State" in Tamil Nadu.

6. West Bengal: Bhatpara on Edge, Three Arrested for Latest Round of Violence

A day after clashes erupted in Bhatpara and Kankinara areas of North 24 Parganas district, the situation remained tense with prohibitory orders in force and huge deployment of police force, officials said on Tuesday, 16 July.
Three persons have been arrested in connection with the fresh wave of violence in the area. Shops and markets remained shut in Bhatpara and Jagaddal areas on Tuesday.
The authorities had imposed section 144 of the CrPC (prohibitory orders) in and around Bhatpara following the violence on Monday. Though there was no report of any untoward incident in the area on Tuesday, people remained indoors. Ghoshpara, Kanchari Road, Jagdal and Kankinara Bazar in Bhatpara were the most effected areas.

7. Gangster, 3 Who Helped Him Escape Killed, Say UP Cops

The Meerut and Muzaffarnagar police killed four criminals in shootouts at separate places in both the districts since the early hours of Tuesday, 16 July. Three policemen, including a Deputy SP, suffered injuries in the two incidents.
The Muzaffarnagar police on Tuesday gunned down Rohit Sandu who was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh, and his aide, Rakesh Yadav (reward of Rs 50,000) in a shootout near Bilaspur village in Muzaffarnagar.
In Meerut, two members of the Sandu gang, Rajat alias Ravindra and Amit alias Sheru, were killed in an exchange of fire with the police on Sardhana-Daurala state highway Tuesday afternoon. They were also involved in the attack on the police team in Muzzafarnagar on 2 July, the police claimed.

8. Indian-Origin Man Drowns Wife in Bathtub for Seeking Divorce, Convicted

An Indian-origin man extradited from India has been convicted by a US court for killing his estranged wife 12 years ago when she asked for a divorce, according to media reports.
Avtar Grewal, 44, who was extradited to the US in 2011, was found guilty of first-degree murder by the jury on Monday, 15 July, for strangulating and submerging his 30-year-old wife Navneet Kaur in a bathtub in the Phoenix suburb of Ahwatukee in 2007, the Arizona Republic reported.
His sentencing is scheduled for 23 August.
The two got married in India in 2005, but had a long-distance relationship. Avtar Grewal was living in Canada while Navneet Kaur was in the US on a visa.

9. 3 Drunk Men Abduct Traffic Cop in Mumbai, Held

High drama ensued when three inebriated youths drove away with a traffic police constable in Mumbai. The incident took place near Chedda Nagar in Chembur on Tuesday, 16 July, when the cop asked the trio, who had halted their car and dozed off in the middle of the road, to move to the side.
The 15-minute chase ended on the Eastern Express Highway at Vikhroli when the abductors stopped the vehicle.
A team led by assistant commissioner of police, Venkat Patil, immediately overpowered the trio and handed them over to Tilak Nagar police. The abducted constable, Vikas Munde, said the trio had beaten him up.
The youths were identified as Viraj Shinde, Gurav Punjwani and Raj.
