Sand mining scam at Statue of Unity

A massive illegal sand mining scam has been unearthed at the site of the world's largest statue. About 4.85 lakh metric tonnes of sand has been siphoned off from the land allotted to build the Tribal Museum at the Statue of Unity site in Kevadiya, which is 100 km from Vadodara, police said. After the police received a complaint from the land revenue department in Narmada district egarding a whole hillock meant for the construction of the museum to be dedicated to lesser-known tribal freedom fighters disappearing thanks to illegal sand mining, Gujarat police launched an investigation into the matter.

While no FIR has yet been filed in the matter by the officials senior police officers said that the administration was waiting for definite names to come to light before including them in the First Information Report (FIR) which would then be more comprehensive.

This would be a better move than first filing an FIR against anonymous persons. It is primarily known that 4.85 lakh MT of sand has been siphoned off and the police as well as revenue department is trying to figure out for how long the scam had been operational and who were the officials overseeing the site.

The sand stolen from the site is worth more than Rs 7 crore at first estimate. However, this amount could go higher as at first estimate. However, this amount could go higher as more details emerge in the investigation.

While the case fell into the lap of the local police station at Garudeshwar, Narmada District Superintendent of Police (SP) Himkar Singh is personally overseeing the investigation , SP Singh said, "While we are still trying to find out those likely to be involved in this scam and who was in charge of overseeing these operations, we can only comment further when the investigation has made progress."
