Cybersecurity jobs in focus

Calcutta: The Bengal government is keen to explore new employment opportunities in the cybersecurity space amid growing demand for professionals and experts.
Industry body Nasscom has estimated the domestic cybersecurity market to touch $32 billion by 2025. The industry size was estimated at around $1.06 billion in 2015. This expansion is set to create a pool of 1 million (10 lakh) cybersecurity professionals to address the domestic and global demand, according to the Cybersecurity Task Force - Vision 2025.
The Bengal government, which has set up a cybersecurity centre of excellence in New Town, estimates that it could potentially create at least around one-lakh cybersecurity experts from the state.
"In a district meeting recently, chief minister Mamata Banerjee has stressed the need to introduce cybercrime as a course in colleges. The information technology department is in touch with the higher education department for framing the courses," said additional chief secretary Debashis Sen at a knowledge exchange workshop on Friday.
He added that there was a growing demand for trained individuals and experts in the field of cybersecurity at the top, mid and entry levels.
"According to surveys, the year-on-year increase in honorarium for cybersecurity experts at the middle management level is 25 per cent. The loss of one expert in one organisation can bring it to its knees especially in the financial world, and if the experts are not there it is likely to be devastating," Sen said, adding that the government was emphasising on creating new employment opportunities in the sector.
The Nasscom vision document notes that given India's successful track record in the global delivery of services, if Indian players are able to achieve a market share close to 20 per cent of the security services market and increase their share in products to 10 per cent, it can easily achieve a revenue of $32 billion in the security domain.
Furthermore, an increase in expenditure in cybersecurity as part of the overall IT expenditure by 2025 will help realise the $35-billion target.
