Flinto Learning Solutions, a Chennai-based start-up, popularly known by its flagship product, Flintobox, is making waves in early child education in the country. The story of Flinto revolves around three young parents Arunprasad Durairaj, Vijay Gandhi and Shreenidhi Srirangam striving to find the best way to nurture kids’ creativity and curiosity. “I strongly believe that the existing early education system for children needs an upgrade,” says Shreenidhi Srirangam, CTO and co-founder, Flintobox. The trio thought it would be a great service/product if someone could curate new activities and ideas which would engage kids positively, at home, away from TV, and do not need the parents’ constant supervision. Since they couldn’t find anyone doing it professionally, they decided to do it themselves. “We quickly brought in people with expertise in child development, game design and education to build the first prototype, which was then tested with more than 60 parents and children,” he said.
The Flintobox product is a series of discovery boxes for children aged 1-12. Every box comes with activities that enables the child to create, play, explore and read based on a particular theme, while catering to more than 12 critical developmental areas. FlintoClass was launched recently as a pilot programme to power independent and unbranded preschools to deliver high-quality early learning system. It is a comprehensive product that includes research-based early learning curriculum, daily lesson plans, pre-packaged materials for every child for every day, online teacher training, assessment for teachers and children, parent communication app, and class display posters.
The start-up raised $1 million in series A round led by Ashwin Chadha, GSF Global, Globevestor (US),AECAL (Germany), and Mauj Mobile in August 2016. The investment was meant to primarily scale up marketing, operations and product development capabilities of the start-up. At present, the start-up has over 4 lakh customers all across India. The addressable market for products such as Flintobox and FlintoClass is about 45 million children in the age group of 2-12 years in urban and semi-urban cities in India. About 40% of sales happens in metros whereas it is 60% in tier 2 cities and the demand is set to grow higher next year. “By end of this year, we aspire to ship 60,000 boxes per month. We are also in talks with a few international partners for global expansion. You’d soon see Flintobox in some key global markets as well and by the end of this year, 1000 preschools across India will be running on Flintoclass platform,” he said. Flintobox already has a small presence in the Middle East and Singapore through distributors. “As Singapore is an ideal starting point for the SE Asian market, we are planning to pilot the product there,” he says.
