Income Tax raids on Karnataka minister, Rs 10 crore recovered
Kritika Banerjee, August 2, 2017
Income Tax department sleuths today swooped down at the residence of Karnataka Energy Minister D K Shivakumar and a luxury resort in Bengaluru where the minister was staying for the last few days.
The resort from where the Karnataka minister was picked up for questioning was the one where 44 Gujarat Congress MLAs had been cooped up for the last few days ahead of the crucial Rajya Sabha polls.
I-T officials, who also searched other properties linked to the minister, said that nearly Rs 10 crore in cash have been recovered so far.
While the Income Tax department maintained that the search at the luxury resort was planned in advance and had nothing to do with Gujarat Congress MLAs staying there, the Congress called it "witch-hunt".
Congress leader Ahmed Patel, who is seeking a re-election to Rajya Sabha from Gujarat, said, "BJP is on an unprecedented witch-hunt to win one Rajya Sabha seat".
HERE IS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE INCOME TAX RAIDS ON THE KARNATAKA MINISTER:
- The Income Tax department conducted searches at Karnataka Energy Minister D K Shivakumar's residence and at a luxury suite of a private resort where the minister was staying. This is the same resort where 44 Gujarat Congress MLAs are camping for the last few days.
- Searches were also conducted at multiple properties related to the Karnataka minister. Income Tax officials said that nearly Rs 10 crore in cash was recovered from various properties linked to the minister, including Rs 7.9 crore cash from Delhi.
- D K Shivakumar was the in-charge of the 44 MLAs housed in the luxury resort. After several of its MLAs quit the party, the Congress flew the 44 MLAs from Gujarat to Bengaluru to ensure that they are not poached by the BJP.
- While Congress cried foul over the Income Tax raids, the officials of the department said that only the Karnataka minister's suite was searched. "The search team has no concern with the MLAs and there has been no contact with MLAs and the search team," the Income Tax department said.
- The resort is located in the Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha constituency, which is represented by Congress MP D K Suresh, who is the younger brother of Shivakumar.
- Congress members today protested against the Income Tax raids and disrupted the proceedings in Parliament. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley insisted that the searches had nothing to do with the Rajya Sabha polls in Gujarat.
- Congress members staged a walkout in Lok Sabha. Arun Jaitley, who spoke on the I-T searches in both Houses of Parliament, said that no search operation was conducted at the resort where the Gujarat Congress MLAs were staying, and only a minister who had "parked himself" there was picked up for questioning.
- As Congress members accused the government of using investigative agencies such as the CBI and Income Tax department to target its leaders, Arun Jaitley said that "whether it is a use or abuse, it depends on recovery (from the raids)".
- In Rajya Sabha today, Congress leader Anand Sharma raised the issue of the I-T raids and alleged that an attempt was being made to "derail and hijack" the Rajya Sabha elections.
- In Lok Sabha, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge called the raids "political vendetta" and "witch-hunt" and accused the government of using central agencies and said such acts would "ruin the ethos of democracy". To this, Arun Jaitley said don't link it with Gujarat MLAs, link it with economic offence.
